Wheeler Army Airfield

Wheeler Army Airfield (IATA: HHI, ICAO: PHHI, FAA LID: HHI), also known as Wheeler Field and formerly as Wheeler Air Force Base, is a United States Army post located in the City & County of Honolulu and in the Wahiawa District of the Island of O'ahu, Hawaii.[4][5] It is a National Historic Landmark for its role in the 7 December 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.[3]

Wheeler AAF comprises approximately 1,389 acres (5.62 km2) of land adjacent to Schofield Barracks and home to a variety of Department of Defense activities including the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), the 169th Aircraft Control & Warning Squadron (169 ACWS) of the Hawaii Air National Guard, the 193rd Aviation Regiment (Medium Lift) and Detachment 55 Operational Support Airlift (Det 55 OSA) of the Hawaii Army National Guard and the Regular Army's 25th Infantry Division's Combat Aviation Brigade.[6][7]

On 6 February 1922, a detachment of 20 enlisted men from Luke Field, proceeded to Schofield Barracks, under Lieutenant William T. Agee, to clear the flying field on the grounds of the former 17th Cavalry Regiment drill grounds and construct housing for the divisional air service. Two canvas hangars were erected and the field cleared of weeds, guava and algaroba trees. Thus Wheeler Field got its modest start. It was named Wheeler Field on 11 November 1922 in honor of Major Sheldon H. Wheeler, former commander of Luke Field on Ford Island, killed in the crash of DH-4B, AAS Ser. No. 63525 on 13 July 1921.[8]

Waianae, Hawaii

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 7.0 square miles (18.2 km2), of which 5.4 square miles (13.9 km2) is land and 1.7 square miles (4.4 km2), or 23.92%, is water.[3]

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 10,506 people, 2,595 households, and 2,221 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,086.0 people per square mile (1,193.1/km²). There were 2,925 housing units at an average density of 859.2 per square mile (332.2/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 9.35% White, 0.81% African American, 0.26% Native American, 19.44% Asian, 27.26% Pacific Islander, 0.97% from other races, and 41.92% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 14.00% of the population.

There were 2,595 households out of which 43.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.0% were married couples living together, 19.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 14.4% were non-families. 10.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 4.04 and the average family size was 4.30.

Waikoloa Village, Hawaii

Waikoloa Village is a census-designated place (CDP) in Hawaiʻi County, Hawaiʻi, United States. The population was 6,362 at the 2010 census,[1] up from 4,806 at the 2000 census. The name Waikoloa is used by the local post office.[2]

Waikoloa Village is located on the west side of the island of Hawaiʻi at 19°56′29″N 155°47′34″W / 19.94139°N 155.79278°W / 19.94139; -155.79278 (19.941445, -155.792655).[3] It is bordered to the west by Puako. Hawaii Route 19 forms the border between the two communities; it leads northeast 14 miles (23 km) to Waimea and southwest 28 miles (45 km) to Kailua-Kona.

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 4,806 people, 1,750 households, and 1,225 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 251.1 people per square mile (96.9/km²). There were 2,057 housing units at an average density of 107.5 per square mile (41.5/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 45.92% White, 0.48% African American, 0.21% Native American, 16.65% Asian, 9.20% Pacific Islander, 1.46% from other races, and 26.09% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.99% of the population.

Wailuku, Hawaii

Wailuku is located just west of Kahului, at the mouth of the ʻĪao Valley. In the early 20th century Wailuku was the main tourist destination on Maui, though it has since been eclipsed with the rise of the resort towns such as Kaʻanapali, so much that there are no hotels to speak of in Wailuku.

Historic sites in the town include Kaʻahumanu Church (named after one of Hawaiʻi's great monarchs, Queen Kaʻahumanu) which dates to 1876, the Wailuku Civic Center Historic District, the site of the Chee Kung Tong Society Building, and the Bailey House, a 19th-century former seminary and home that houses a history museum and the Maui Historical Society.

There are two ancient temples near Wailuku, called heiau — the Halekiʻi Heiau and the Pihanakalani Heiau. Both date back hundreds of years and were used for religious purposes by the native Hawaiians.[citation needed]

Waipahu, Hawaii

Waipahu is a former sugarcane plantation town and now census-designated place (CDP) located in the ʻEwa District on the island of Oʻahu in the City & County of Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the CDP population was 38,216.[1] The U.S. postal code for Waipahu is 96797.

Waipahu is the name of an artesian spring.[2] In Hawaiian, Waipahu is derived from wai, meaning water, and pahū, meaning "burst or explode"; combined, Waipahu means "water forced up (as out of a spring)".[3] The early Native Hawaiians took pleasure in the cool and clear water gushing from the ground and named this spring Waipahu. Before the Western civilization set foot in Hawaii, the Hawaiians considered Waipahu to be the capital of Oahu. Royalty in the Kingdom of Hawaii would often gather and enjoy the fresh water from the spring Waipahu.[2]

In 1897, Oahu Sugar Company was incorporated, and its board of directors located the sugar mill in Waipahu. It had 943 field workers. There were 44 Hawaiians, including 10 minors; 57 Portuguese; 443 Japanese, 408 of them contract laborers; and 399 Chinese, 374 of whom were contract laborers.[4] The company's managers from 1897 to 1940 were August Ahrens (1897–1904), E.K. Bull (1904–1919), J.B. Thomson (1919–1923), E.W. Greene (1923–1937), and Hans L'Orange (1937–1956).[5]

ʻEwa Beach, Hawaii

ʻEwa Beach (/ɛvə/)[1] or simply ʻEwa is a census-designated place (CDP) located in ʻEwa District and the City & County of Honolulu along the leeward coast of Oʻahu in Hawaii. As of the 2010 Census, the CDP had a total population of 14,955. The U.S. postal code for ʻEwa Beach is 96706.

The word ʻewa means "crooked" or "ill-fitting" in Hawaiian.[2] The name comes from the myth that the gods Kāne and Kanaloa threw a stone to determine the boundaries, but it was lost and later found at Pili o Kahe.[3] Hawaiian settlement on the ʻEwa Plain dates back at least to the 12th Century C.E., at which time Kanaka maoli expanded the main channel of Puʻuloa (Pearl Harbor) before creating fishponds and terraced agricultural fields in the surrounding area. Scholars have recognized ʻEwa's ancient fishponds as exemplary evidence of Native Hawaiian ingenuity.[4]

Before Ewa Beach became a town it was first a huge plantation farm when Hawaiʻi was under the rule of Queen Liliʻuokalani. After the queen had lost her throne to the Americans, W.R Lowrie became the first plantation manager.[5][better source needed] Ewa Beach is significant for its association with Ewa Sugar Plantation. Throughout the twentieth century, it played a very influential role in Hawaii's culture, economy, and politics.[6]

Kapaa, Hawaii

Kapaʻa is located at 22°5′18″N 159°20′16″W / 22.08833°N 159.33778°W / 22.08833; -159.33778 (22.088281, -159.337706).[2] According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 10.0 square miles (26 km2). 9.8 square miles (25 km2) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2) of it (2.40%) is water.

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 9,471 people, 3,129 households, and 2,281 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 971.2 inhabitants per square mile (375.1/km²). There were 3,632 housing units at an average density of 372.4 per square mile (143.8/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 27.8% White, 0.3% Black, 0.5% Native American, 31.7% Asian, 10.0% Pacific Islander, 1.0% from other races, and 28.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.5% of the population.

There were 3,129 households out of which 40.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.1% were married couples living together, 15.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.1% were non-families. 20.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.99 and the average family size was 3.44.

Maunaloa, Hawaii

As of the census[5] of 2000, there were 230 people, 65 households, and 52 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,374.6 people per square mile (522.4/km²). There were 91 housing units at an average density of 543.9 per square mile (206.7/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 15.7% White, 0.3% African American, 18.7% Asian, 34.4% Pacific Islander, and 30.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.

There were 65 households out of which 50.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.9% were married couples living together, 18.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.5% were non-families. 13.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 1.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.54 and the average family size was 3.96.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 43.5% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 14.3% from 45 to 64, and 8.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 22 years. For every 100 females, there were 109.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.0 males.

Haiku, Hawaii

Haiku is an unincorporated community in Maui County on the island of Maui in the state of Hawaii. For United States Census purposes, it is part of the Haiku-Pauwela, Hawaii census-designated place, which also includes Pauwela.[1]

Kapaau, Hawaii

For statistical purposes, the United States Census Bureau has defined Kapaʻau as a census-designated place (CDP). The census definition of the area may not precisely correspond to local understanding of the area with the same name. The population was 1,734 at the 2010 census,[2] up from 1,159 at the 2000 census.

Kapaʻau is located at 20°14′5″N 155°48′23″W / 20.23472°N 155.80639°W / 20.23472; -155.80639 (20.234711, -155.806361)[3] in the North Kohala District of Hawaii County. It is bordered to the east by Halaula, and Hawi is 2 miles (3 km) to the west. Hawaii Route 270 is the main road through the community.

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 1,159 people, 405 households, and 270 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 536.1 people per square mile (207.2/km²). There were 443 housing units at an average density of 204.9 per square mile (79.2/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 23.47% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 27.44% Asian, 9.32% Pacific Islander, 1.73% from other races, and 37.88% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 16.65% of the population.
